🧚🏻‍♂️🍊🍪 FRIDAY 5 FAVORITE THINGS: BAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT

NOVEMBER 27, 2022

Share:

Hello and Happy Black Friday! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. My sister's turkey stole the show this year. Everything was so delicious - including my sprouts and aioli, which almost didn't make it because there was a driving snafu that almost derailed the Holiday. I'm just so glad we were able to get there because it was a wonderful dinner to start what's been such a peaceful then productive weekend. You'll read about everything that's going on in this week's Friday 5 but that doesn't even begin to encapsulate the shuffle that goes into an exciting new launch, which is happening now..

1. GOOD HAIR DAYS WITH PUREOLOGY & MY NEW "SO PUT TOGETHER" VELVET BOWS

Another win this week ( and it's a small one) was a few good hair days. Curly haired girls get it, you have to celebrate them when you can. I have Pureology's Color Fanatic Spray to thank for that. It was recommended to me at Salon Centric and I have been loving how smooth it makes my coarse, curly hair. Over 10,000 reviews on Amazon cannot be wrong, this product is an absolute banger!! Use sparingly as you really don't need a lot. And to top it off, I wore my new Black Sheep Velvet Bow Barrette to Thanksgiving. These bows are super cute. Please let me know what you think of the color assortment. Should we add any colors you don't see but would like here?

Hi, I'm Jenna

The blogs you'll find here are inspired by my interests in beauty + wellness which developed from collecting fashion magazines during my newspaper carrying days in elementary school. I later attended Umass Lowell and graduated from FIDM before working for world renowned estheticians and beauty brands like Sonya Dakar, Smashbox, Tarte & Tata Harper. Today I am an e-commerce marketer and Amazon specialist for 3 wonderful companies on Cape Cod and newly licensed LMT still studying for my esthetician's license. I'm a curious, color-obsessed creative.

  • "Before #2-5, here's a little Lightning Round. A round up of little things that have been sparking joy for me lately. Ok, let's go."

    • Drinking: The caramel brulè latte from Starbucks

    • Loving: a 4 day weekend.. quiet time at home with my dog

    • Ordering: Another Cider purchase.. I think I am addicted. This satin dress fit me like a glove. I do a thing where if something really works for me (and it's cheap) I like to have 2 or 3 and will add it to the rotation. This dress works with tights in the winter but will really be perfect for summer.

    • Wearing: The Cape Saltie Pumpkin Glow mask while writing this blog. If you got the mask, please send feedback to me on Instagram. I'd love to hear what you think about bringing it back as a seasonal launch next year.

    • Wanting: This Jennifer Meyer Red Boulder Inlay Heart Necklace. Haha, I went BIG on wanting this week. Why not? I have loved it for years and told myself if I ever do well (well, this would have to be incredibly well) one day I will get myself this as one of those big presents. When I paid off school, I treated myself to a pair of designer boots. In hindsight, I think a piece of jewelry is way more fitting for that sort of occasion. For one, it lasts forever.

    • Burning: I'm actually not burning a Bedrock Tree Farm Candle but want to be .. haha. I did not anticipate how well they would do and want to make sure I can cover everyone's needs until the shipping cutoff then I will light mine.. that is, if Shiso is left over. Shisoreminds me of a spa scent. So fresh and good!

    • Watching: .. Videos on rosacea and eczema as part of my Spa Tech esthetician curriculum.

2. DIFFUSING WITH THE CUTEST LAUNCH OF THE YEAR.. GINGERBREAD MAN

He's here. Gingerbread Man Essential Oil Diffuser Blend just dropped just in time for the Holidays. The festive holiday blend with ginger, cinnamon leaf, coffee bean oil and sweet orange, is unlike any other Essential Oil Blend by Cape Saltie because this one is specifically and exclusively for diffusing in the home. Evoke the delicious smell of natural ingredients used to make freshly baked gingerbread cookies in a warm n' cozy tea-like blend. I know, especially during Christimas time, that most people love the smell of warm gingerbread cookies.. though I am aware not everybody diffuses oils for deodorizing or scenting the home. A lot of people like to burn candles (I do) but switching it up sometimes is great and I am going to share why and how.. But first take a look at our new man!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DIFFUSING ESSENTIAL OILS?

Delivery System

Using a diffuser is one of the fastest and most effective ways to disperse and maximize the aromatherapeutic properties of essential oils around your home. Yes, clean-burning soy candles are great for that too, but not as powerful as a diffuser. So that's the benefit of the delivery system.

Health Benefits

My most recent education in pursuit of my Massage Therapy license affirmed what I already knew about essential oil ingredients —the health benefits are vast! Essential Oils have been known to

+ Improve sleep experiences

+ Help reduce stress and anxiety

+ Promote whole body relaxation

Avoid Irritating (or Potentially Hazardous) Fragrance Chemicals

I want to hit the nail right on the head when I start this.. you cannot avoid allergies or irritants entirely using son-synthetic materials to make scents though I do love and prefer non-synthetic essential oils because I find them to be superior quality (when purchased through chosen suppliers) and a more pleasant experience (when used with precise and safe measurement) vs. synthetic fragrance materials. Here's why.. for one, some fragrance chemicals are recognized as health hazards by the CDC. Note that I am saying some, that does not mean all and I'm also saying not all "chemicals are bad". Water is a chemical! Generally speaking, I have personally found using essential oils vs. synthetic scents to be less irritating to me. You could say I have a sensitive constitution, I almost had to go to the ER after using a cheap shampoo because the fragrance in it set off an allergic reaction. Also note, some essential oils could set off an allergic reaction or act as an irritant to people as well which I believe largely has to do with the quality and concentration of the ingredient. This is why all topically applied Blended Essential Oil formulas were sent to IFRA - whose purpose is to ensure the safety of fragrance materials through a dedicated science program - for approval under the direction of my perfumer.

HOW DO I DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS IN MY HOME?

Find Your Delivery System — Get Your Diffuser System

First you'll need to find a delivery system for diffusing your essential oils. I don't think you have to break the bank unless you are really particular. I am not.. There are so many on the market. I will often pick up cute ones when I see them at Marshall's because I like to have them where I can .. in my office, at home. My tips for finding a good one?

+ Stay away from any diffuser that adds heat because warming up aromatic molecules breaks down chemical compounds that could alter the smell.

+ Find one with a reservoir of at-least 100ml

+ Look for a diffuser that can cover the square footage of your bedroom, approx 250 sq ft? - I think bedroom best room in the house to use them

+ Look for something small-ish.. should be no bigger than the size of a Yeti thermos.. the bigger, bulkier diffusers tend to make the most noise

+ Avoid battery operated devices and diffusers with a lot of bells and whistles.. you don't need a light show, haha, if you want that get a crackling wick Bedrock candle ;)

Add Your Blend to Diffuser, Followed by Blend

Add your water to the diffuser blend. The rule of thumb, when starting to diffuse essential oils, is less is more. When you're getting started, start with 2-3 drops and see how you feel. Eventually, you may build up to 5-6 or even 7 drops per aromatherapeutic experience. Gingerbread Man is a 10ml Essential Oil Diffuser blend. At 2-7 drops per use, you will have at-least 40-65 experiences with your one tiny bottle if you are using a standard 100 ml Diffuser. That's another reason I love diffusing oils, it's actually a more economical to experience essential oils using a diffuser than it is with candles. If your aromatherapy diffuser reservoir is bigger, here is a guide below to inform how many drops to use for your size. I don't think anyone here is going to be using a 500 ml but..

100ml: 4-6 drops

200ml: 7-11 drops

300ml: 12-16 drops

400ml: 17-22 drops

500ml: 23-26 drops

3. RETURN TO POWER YOGA OF CAPE COD & GREYBACK CLUB

I mentioned Thanksgiving was really great this year. Going to Power Yoga to get centered before definitely started it off on the right foot. It has been nearly two years since I have been to class. Considering I used to go "every damn day" that's just crazy! Yoga, specifically the yoga that Jill Abraham delivers to the Cape, has done so much for me. It's been my church at times. One of my oldest friends, Alissa, inspired me to get back after some back and forth sharing of ways to feel better after we both were feeling not-so-great. Alissa, a tech executive & Greyback wellness group founder, was the first friend I made at FIDM on the first day of school. She's also been one of the biggest supporters of Cape Saltie and shared enthusiasm for everything I do. Being that she is a candle fanatic and even has her own line, this weekend she's sharing the launch of our Bedrock Tree Farm Candles to her followers so I wanted to share something Greyback has given me.. Sarah Blondin meditations! Blondin's poetic, beautifully-written meditations are beyond lovely and I credit Alissa + Greyback for introducing me to them. Follow the Greyback Self Care Club on Instagram to get their weekly all things wellness updates to enhance your heart, health and home life.  Check out the grounding meditation by Sarah Blondin below. This is a wonderful mediation to listen to as you are diffusing an Essential Oil Blend (try Gingerbread Man) or have your favorite - my favorite- candle going.

4. A FOUR DAY WEEKEND ON CAPE

To quote the Grinch, this week's 4th favorite thing "came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.." I really enjoyed having a four day weekend. Oh my gosh, did I need it! Didn't we all? It gave me the opportunity to be more present with my family and friends and appreciate the beauty of the Cape and -finally- some stillness all around me.

5. ALL GINGERBREAD EVERYTHING AT CHATHAM CANDY MANOR + BEYOND

Last year I went on my Gingerbread tear. I will call it a tear.. everything Gingerbread I saw (within reason) I had to get! Some people are obsessed with snowmen, some like the nativity.. I think Gingerbread Men are going to be my forever Christmas thing. To celebrate my special launch, I treated myself to my favorite caramel Gingerbread Men from Chatham Candy Manor. It's also a Holiday tradition for me to go check out their seasonal collections. Anyways, the love doesn't stop there.. I have Gingerbread Man sweats and love these cheap Betsey Gingerbread earrings I found at Marshall's. Ofc, they don't last so I was so happy to find them again this year. I'm wearing them today for the launch of my very own Gingerbread Man. I cannot wait to see if you all are as crazy for Gingerbread at Christmas as I am. Happy Thanksgiving. Xx Jenna
