🍦🍏🛁 FRIDAY 5 FAVORITE THINGS: ELEVATE THE WAY YOU FEEL
Hi Everyone and HelloO0Ooo Spring. This last week was the first I noticed all of the flowers starting to pop and felt the optimism the season brings. That was lacking in me for a little bit. I know I kicked off the New Year in my last blog with biceps blazing so, firstly, I want to apologize for my overzealousness in the winter, haha. I was feeling energy for 2024, coupled with a budding workout routine and got a little ahead of myself. Then I lost some of that steam and retreated to ALL 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls during slow cooker season but still managed to make some magic, memories and Cape Saltie milestones-in-the-makin' happen. And now, here we are in May.
Why is it that wise people say to wait until spring for resolutions to start up anyway? In many cultures, spring symbolizes renewal, growth, and rejuvenation but this wisdom clearly stems from practical considerations too. Especially if you're a New Englandah! We, I for sure, get increased energy and a more positive mood with the longer days, warmer weather, and abundant sunlight. This makes me feel more optimistic and motivated to make changes. But do we need to seek change or be on some self improvement mission? Marcus Aurelius says your only focus should be on getting better at what you’re doing. Focus on what you’re doing. Get better at what you’re doing. Everything else is a complete waste of time. That's in my lightning ⚡︎ round! 😉
So.. I'm on a mission to seek out optimism in my daily routine, especially when it seems to be in short supply — the perspective is a choice. And before all the other things that I blogged about early in the year fall into place (things like calendarizing, goal planning, to-do lists), it probably is best to spend some time in the cold quiet to first just cultivate a mental attitude—preferably one characterized by hopefulness and confidence in the possibility of favorable outcomes, even with the challenges 2024 will present. I know my New Year path did not adhere to linear patterns.. neither does Mother Nature!
This blog is all about the beauty of choosing and elevating the way we feel. This could be anything from my attitude towards career or little hacks to help me refill my cup after a long day of appointments.. like my favorite healthy-ish snack. And please send any you have my way to add to the list or let me know if something on here creatives positive change for you. I'm not recommending anything unless I truly believe in it. I believe in us! Happy Spring! Xx JD.
"Before #1-5, here's a little Lightning Round. A round up of little things that have been sparking joy for me lately. Ok, let's go."
Listening to: Binging The Skinny Confidential
Loving: Walking into the Cape Saltie studio on a Sunday morning.
Ordering: Packaging. I shared that we ordered samples in February. In June we should have all components in house for approximately 12 new collection additions. I have never done anything like this before..
Eating: Green apples, peanut butter and chocolate chips. This remains the very best after school snack. Teddie Peanut Butter and Chiradelli chocolate chips are a must.
Following: @britacooks, @pizzashark, @tlskinstudio, @youcandoitgardening, @janewin_jewelry
Burning: Bedrock Tree Farm Candles in Shiso. One of my favorite scents for Spring/Summer. This candle smells like sweet, herbal basil.
Eating: High protein breakfasts, whenever I can. High-protein breakfasts can regulate appetite and increase feelings of fullness by slowing down digestion and stabilizing blood sugar levels, which helps prevent overeating later in the day. Additionally, the amino acids in protein are essential for muscle repair and growth, promoting a leaner physique and supporting overall metabolic health.
Wearing: New pajamas from Amazon. Only $35. And they're on sale right now for 20% off.
Watching:This is Us on Netflix after ALL seven seasons of Gilmore Girls this winter.
Drinking: Water. Lots of water.
Inspired by: I saw this bit Jerry Seinfeld did about focusing on your craft andsaved it. I haven't been as social on social media as I used to with Cape Saltie because sometimes I second guess myself instead of fully being myself. I don't want to do that. I'd like to enjoy my community more and this is a good reminder to not judge myself so much.
Wanting: this Luke's Diner tshirt. I owe it to myself after 7 seasons! And the reboot. lol.

1. LIQUID IV
Sugar is my weakness. Coffee is my weakness. Finally — I have made a switch that is working for me. Instead of hydrating(?) with a large coffee, I now have a colorful "Quencher" filled with water and LiquidIV in the Raspberry Melon flavor. Liquid IV is a hydration multiplier that's designed to maximize hydration and replenish essential electrolytes more efficiently than water alone. It's a powder that you mix with water to create a flavored drink. The product claims to utilize Cellular Transport Technology (CTT), which is a precise ratio of electrolytes, glucose, and water, to enhance fluid absorption in the body. Can I invest in this? When I worked at a spa in college, I started drinking Emergen-C in a big thermos to elevate my water so I would drink more. I wanted to do that again so I picked up LiquidIV on Amazon. It's working! I had a client visit recently who also praised it for marathon+ training. Liquid IV contains electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which are crucial for muscle function. During exercise or physical activity, the body loses electrolytes through sweat. Replenishing these electrolytes helps maintain proper muscle function and prevents cramping and fatigue. And I am solving the lack of caffeine with a Celsius. I don't know if that's any better for me than coffee but I know I feel better when I get caffeine from Celsius vs. coffee. I am not getting the crash.
2. SPA WATER FIZZING BATH POWDER
I told the same client, "You have to start taking Epsom Salt Baths. They will change the way you feel". I may not be running marathons these days but sometimes I have what feels like a marathon schedule between work, in-studio and mobile appointments. That is juggling.. and heavy lifting. The first thing I do after a long, physically demanding day is take an Epsom Salt Bath with my Fizzing Bath Powder. Lately with the Spa Water essential oil scent. The fact that my entire body starts to feels different just sliding down into the water makes me so proud. Don't forget, there's 3-5 soaks in each packette! Spa Water is transporting!!
3. ACTUALLY BEING IN THE MOUNTAINS
This winter I enjoyed being transported both physically and mentally with skiing. We haven't had a new blog in a while and, polls down, my favorite thing since I last wrote has been trying skiing again. I liked being transported by way of the lift to a completely different, manicured snowy world high on the hill away from everything. The focus required to navigate the slopes, put me into a state of mindfulness and presence, which was a nice mental break. I like mental checkouts that are healthy for the mind and body. Plus I wasn't too bad this time. Ofc, I had to get the Belgian waffle at the end.
4. THE SOFTEST PAJAMAS THAT WON'T BREAK THE BANK
A pair that's proving to be worth every penny. After eyeing a luxurious set on The Outnet for a while, I couldn't justify the splurge—though, truth be told, it wasn't even that extravagant. But I'm usually the type to cling to worn-out sweats until they're practically threadbare. After some fabric detective work (hello, modal and cotton), I stumbled upon this best-selling pair on Amazon that ticks all the boxes. Not only are they surprisingly affordable, but they boast the softest, buttery feel—making them the go-to-grab of my pajama drawer. I bought them in my "color season" method colors, which are Autumnal beige and green. Have you ever had that analysis done to find your best colors? Here's a short video that explains it here and a link to the jams.
5. VEGAN SOFT SERVE AT SWEET IZZY & A G.I.V.E.A.W.A.Y
This blog is all about little ways to change how I feel, and here's one that's a simple pleasure. Although (coming from the perspective of a fellow proprietor) there is nothing "simple" about what Sweet Izzy does. Sweet Izzy exclusively serves 100% dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free and vegan plant-based ice cream on Cape Cod and Denver. To ensure that everyone can enjoy Cape's most loved treat with ease and inclusivity requires dedication, craft, thoughtfulness, purpose. They do it all so well! Another standout about Sweet Izzy that you would never know unless you went, whether its intentional or not, is the positive energy that shines through the window to their customers. Coupled with the creamiest yummy soft serve and an array of vegan toppings, it literally changes how you feel. Having a little Sundae on a Friday before going to my PM mobile appointments makes me happy then my clients pick up on that. Positive energy is contagious! It's also a choice.. especially on days when things may not be going to plan because that's always going to happen in business. I never realized how uniquely awesome they were in that way until having my own. Now we're sharing that good energy together by partnering for the sweetest G.I.V.E.A.W.A.Y ever— just in time for Mother's Day. Everything in this Strawberry-themed prize bundle is so good. I hope you will all go enter on here on Instagram and check them out on Cape. Or, perhaps, just be inspired by how a little sweetness and smile can go a long way!
